EXT. PARADISE MOTEL - DAY
A crusty motel with an aging neon sign borders a dreary highway. The green pool,
darkened momentarily by the passing shadow of an eighteen wheeler, is surrounded
by rotting patio furniture and cracked cement.
A ten year old girl, EZZY FISH, crunches over the gray gravel parking lot and passes
the long row of drizzling AC units. Her clothes are loose fitting hand-me-downs.
Her pensive and pale face is framed dramatically by dark, stringy hair.
The rusty ice machine HUMS like a power saw as Ezzy plunges her hand in deeply,
withdrawing a handful of ice.
EZZY (V.O.)
I can't say motel living is bad.
She heads around the corner, sucking on the ice.
THE BACKSIDE OF THE MOTEL is a narrow alley littered with trash. Ezzy picks
her way through, holding the ice high above the tall weeds.
EZZY (V.O.)
I can't say it's so good either.
Ezzy stops at a window and peers inside.
EZZY (V.O.)
I guess it really depends on whether or not you're a guest.
She pushes her nose to the window pane.
INT. MOTEL ROOM BATHROOM, EZZY'S POV - DAY
A BALD MAN with tattooed arms enters the bathroom.
EZZY (V.O.)
Guests get clean towels and a triangle folded on the top of each roll
of toilet paper. Mama says that's so half-used rolls look like new.
The Bald man unzips his pants and positions over the toilet. He flips the toilet seat
up, leaving the sanitized strip of paper around the seat intact.
EZZY (V.O.)
Guests get a strip of paper around the toilet to show that it's clean.
If the paper doesn't get ripped, we get them out of the garbage and
use them over. Just smooth out the wrinkles is all.
The Bald Man flushes and exits.
EXT. MOTEL BACK ALLEY - DAY
Ezzy moves to the next window.
INT. MOTEL ROOM, EZZY'S POV - DAY
A family unpacks their suitcases on the bed. The TWO CHILDREN jump around
excitedly as the PARENTS yell at them.
MOTHER
Calm down! Stop it!
FATHER
Get on outside.
EZZY (V.O.)
They get clean sheets, too. Not clean blankets, though. Mama says it
costs too much to wash the blankets every time a guest leaves...
But at least they get to leave.
The children scramble out the door.
EXT. MOTEL BACK ALLEY - DAY
Ezzy covers one of her eyes with her hand and watches the family through the window.
EZZY (V.O.)
That's what my green eye's for. Leaving.
She covers her green eye and opens the other, revealing a blue eye.
EZZY (V.O.)
My blue eye is for staying.
Ezzy moves through the weeds, peering briefly into a few other windows as she passes.
EZZY (V.O.)
When I watch people through the windows, I can only use my green eye.
It only works on things that aren't staying around.
Ezzy stops in front of a window.
EZZY (V.O.)
At least that's what my sister taught me. But my sister doesn't believe
in that stuff anymore.
Ezzy covers her blue eye and leans in toward the window.
INT. MOTEL ROOM, EZZY'S POV - DAY
Bathed in green color, CHARLOTTE, 16 and dangerously beautiful, and LED,
muscular and 26, are pushed up against a wall, screwing furiously. Led wears only
a cowboy hat as he moves and grinds into Charlotte.
Charlotte clings to the wall, enraptured. Slowly her head turns toward the window.
Her eyes flutter open, revealing one blue and one green eye.
After a moment, she focuses on Ezzy's SILHOUETTE in the window. Her eyes
suddenly narrow with fury.
CHARLOTTE
EZZY!!
Ezzy's silhouette darts away from the window.
EXT. MOTEL BACK ALLEY - DAY
The ice splatters on the ground as the weeds rustle loudly.
EXT. MOTEL - DAY
Ezzy runs across the gravel parking lot towards the office. The motel neon sign
lights up with a blue flicker against the burnt orange sky.
